    Bursting Bubbles, Trashing Trolls

When is the last time you realized you had your own personal rain cloud pouring questions? This is what I call an impromptu post, and it’s happening because within hours of each other two of my favourite friends – creative and successful gentlemen I admire profoundly – were brave enough to publicly disclose something… They are scared. Or maybe they were scared, but somehow soldiered on. Thankfully for the rest of us they pushed through their internal naysaying and continued w

Learning from the Artist Series II: Michelangelo

While brainstorming for an upcoming keynote on Creativity, I started thinking about the artists whose lives I have studied a bit (as a former World History teacher) and what we could learn from them – not particularly from their oeuvres, but from their creative process and the way they lived. At first I set out to make one comprehensive post, but then recoiled, thinking it would be too overwhelming. So, this will be a blog series of sorts, highlighting one artist per post. (

Mobile is Killer: Experiment in “AppSmash”

I’ve been wanting to try this for, like, MONTHS and finally did it today. It could be more polished (like if I wouldn’t have said both “fancy-dancy” AND “fancy-schmancy” in under 2 minutes), but as my kid says, “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”. By the way, I believe the term “appsmash” is derived from Mr. Greg Kulowiec (@gregkulowiec) of EdTechTeacher. Process is as follows 1. Make lovely sketches in Paper app by Fifty-Three on the iPad (I use my signature col

Learning Creative Learning MOOC Activity 1: The Gears of My Childhood

I’m really excited to be joining Mitch Resnick and the crew from MIT Media Lab for the “Learning Creative Learning” MOOC (#lcltalk). I had the pleasure of visiting the Lab a few years ago as part of Alan November’s Building Learning Communities conference. We dabbled in remix culture and I explored collaborative storytelling with the Scratch program. Our first assignment was to read Seymour Papert’s Gears of My Childhood and write a short description about an object from our

“Spec”-tacular: Going Beyond the Rubric (The Makes, the TIONS, the Promises)

I have a confession, and I suspect I’m not alone. I love developing projects and opportunities for my students to create, but I absolutely despise “grading” them. Even worse, I don’t care much for writing rubrics to accompany them. Why? They seem confining and overly prescriptive – the same reason I shy away from lined paper. What I DO love is: * sharing examples as a source of inspiration or critique, *offering feedback throughout the process, and *sharing and celebrating th

Make du Jour: Daily Diet of Creativity

One of my favorite quotes on my classroom’s massive white glossy “inspiration wall” is from John Cage: “There is no win, there is no fail, there is only make” My personal goal this year is to get students involved in the creative process as much as possible, shifting away from consuming and stressing the importance of producing, contributing, making, and sharing on a daily basis. In addition to their regular steady diet of project-based assessments, I’m trying to have several

Minding the P’s: the #BLC13 Experience

It’s been a few days since returning from my third (and probably most inspiring) year at November Learning’s Building Learning Communities Conference (aka BLC13) at the exquisite Boston Park Plaza Hotel, which- as @Braddo pointed out upon arrival, has graciously included a portrait of me. All joking aside, I was thrilled to have attended, albeit alone (but, with Twitter, is one ever really alone?). For me, BLC is the ultimate conference…not only is it pedagogy (versus technol

Break, Shake, Make: Making as Learning for #teachtheweb

Week 1 Assignment for #teachtheweb MOOC: Reflect on Making as Learning. I decided to piece together some of my slides from a presentation I did about Creativity and Making for students in Vancouver, Canada (Van Tech and Crofton House), as well as some additional clips and quotes. I really had planned on providing a voiceover but the music was so groovy (thanks, Jamendo.com !) that I decided to leave as is and annotate it here in this post. BREAK (out of the box), SHAKE (it up
