Thinking Like an Artist: Be Porous, Push Past, and Play

What seemed like ages ago I did my first TEDx talk – TEDxHonolulu 2011 – with my creative partner from “History for Music Lovers”, Herb Mahelona. It was really tricksy because we didn’t live on the same island and therefore couldn’t practice together until the day before the event, each having memorized our respective parts of the script and practicing with voice recordings of the other punctuated by pauses. To be honest I thought I’d never do another one until several months

Making like Charlemagne: Paper 53 Takeover on Instagram

This weekend I had the supreme privilege of doing a #53takeover of the Instagram account of my favourite app – Paper, by Fifty-Three (@fiftythree). The folks at Fifty-Three have been nothing but lovely in all respects and the app has veritably changed my life and how I work – both professionally and creatively – so needless to say I was tickled. I approached the takeover from a teaching perspective – to me it wasn’t about showcasing my art but rather a few thematic “lessons”,

    #rawthought: VizVoVolley

I am in the process of archiving some hand-drawn iconography I created for some recent slide decks.  I store these (when I can remember) to a Tumblr called Myconography and try to tag it with the literal definition as well as the metaphor I used it to represent. Examples: Connection Storytelling Possibilities; Potential, Wabi-Sabi Progress, Path, Journey In my Visual Thinking workshop called Image is Everything, I do an exercise where people are asked to quickly draw their go

Standing on the Shoulders: The Artists Who Have Influenced Me

I talk about remix a lot – probably more than most people. I even have a pretty meaty G+ community that houses all kinds of examples. I also sketch a lot- in fact, this past year, I’ve averaged about 10 sketches a day for my various projects: Serendipidoodle, #100daysofhashtaggerie, Drawmour, #threethirtysketchquote, and My day in One Word – not to mention the ones I do for keynotes (about 350 per one hour keynote). I upload most of these to my My-conography Tumblr. Sketching

    Let’s Play DEAD

So here’s an idea. This would be great, I think, for students if you are an educator, but I plan to use it in my personal life as well, with my recent pet projects @Serendipidoodle and #threethirtysketchquote We need the “white space” to be creative. Chris Long, who attended my keynote at California State University at Fullerton in May, called it “miracle grow” for creativity (Love!) So my suggestion, as we emerge into an increasingly visual society, is to offer something a b

Mobile is Killer: Experiment in “AppSmash”

I’ve been wanting to try this for, like, MONTHS and finally did it today. It could be more polished (like if I wouldn’t have said both “fancy-dancy” AND “fancy-schmancy” in under 2 minutes), but as my kid says, “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”. By the way, I believe the term “appsmash” is derived from Mr. Greg Kulowiec (@gregkulowiec) of EdTechTeacher. Process is as follows 1. Make lovely sketches in Paper app by Fifty-Three on the iPad (I use my signature col
