    Soundbitification

“We’re looking for half seconds to excerpt” – so ends this intriguing Wired article by Clive Thompson. I’ve been pondering GIFS and other short bursts of content for the past few weeks, particularly since the illustrious Jim Groom “gave good GIF” in an #etmooc presentation a couple of weeks ago. from http://erdalinci.tumblr.com/ I’m full of questions, such as: * does repetition change meaning? * why are we drawn to the infinite moments – making time stand still? * can one be

How Life is Like Dinner Theatre: On Embracing Participatory Culture

First watch this: This was indeed life not too long ago. Until, perhaps, the “YOU” was inserted as a prefix to “TUBE”, among other advances. In the ’80s, I recall watching Videodrome, primarily because my New Wave idol Deborah Harry of Blondie was starring. Someone has uploaded the entire film here , but here’s a gist: “Television is reality, and reality is less than television” Talk about “participatory”! That scene is clearly dystopian, but I think offers a bit of insight i

The Mona Lisa Effect: or Why Da Vinci Would Have Loved Skateboarding

First off, I’m sticking with this title, even though there’s some buzz on the Internet about a very different sort of “Mona Lisa Effect”. Most of us are quite familiar with the illusive and exquisite Leonardo Da Vinci painting “La Gioconda“, but we forget to realize that – at least in the artist’s eyes- she was never finished. That’s right, no big surprise here but Da Vinci was a perfectionist. He rarely completed works to his satisfaction and – much to the chagrin of his cli

    Etmooc Classico

I wanted to make something with the words most frequently used in our #etmchat sessions, as shown here: At first I decided to make a poem of sorts: So I went to my iPad and played around with the VidRhythm app. Here’s what became of it: #dataviz #etmooc #fun #twitter

To Be or Not to Bedazzled: What Comes First- the Story or the Tool?

While on my nightly scroll through Tumblr I chanced upon this: I must say it got my  princess hormones all a flutter. But then I started wondering…would it perform the same way? What if it was impossible to clean? Would people visit my kitchen just to see it? Would it, by some magic,  make better cookies? We ask ourselves similar questions when exploring “Digital Storytelling” ( a handy phrase for the same old storytelling we’ve used for years prettified by various digital to

    #lovestory: Digital Storytelling project #1

I wanted to do something with social media – something that could have had a bot with a clever algorithm create. I decided to use Storify to create a love story based on hashtagged key words in a relationship (#lonely_#crush_#flirt_#kiss_#lust_#love_#jealously_#heartbreak_#alone) [View the story “#lovestory” on Storify] #project #etmooc #digitalstorytelling #socialmedia #hashtag #Storify

The Wormhole in Our Pockets: Technological Determinism #edcmooc

I loved the  first week resources in #edcmooc. Like most coursemates, I was impressed by the poignancy and Indonesian shadow puppet aesthetics of Bendito Machine 3 …but did anyone think of Hieronymous Bosch when the “computer” character emerged? This is what I’m talking about: “Inbox” reminded me of this charming love story, “Post-It Love”  (also wordless and using Post-its, but devoid of technology except for the fact that the entire project is an exquisite example of stop-m

Why We Need Digital Vikings #edcmooc

This is a Viking. So is this. So am I, or at least I try to be. A Digital Viking. A fearless explorer. Not afraid to go miles and miles…to reach unfamiliar territory that will (hopefully) yield rewards. Risky. Going with the Intuition. Resourceful. And if perchance something doesn’t work out  – the Labradors of the cyberterritory – not ashamed to pack it up and move on. This week the ongoing debate over the concepts “digital native” and “digital immigrant” came up in #edcmooc

    Leveraging for Legacy

image: my student, Sam St. John I’ve been really enjoying participating in #etmooc, and the last Blackboard session with Alec got me thinking of connectivism again. Each year I have my IB Theory of Knowledge students read “Knowing Knowledge” by George Siemens (2006) KnowingKnowledge_LowRes (1) Last year we had a lively socratic circle activity with a Twitter backchannel, but this year I decided to include the reading and obligatory reflection in their semester exam. #etmooc Intro Challenge- Hawaiian Time

In Hawaii we have this thing called ‘Hawaiian Time”, which is basically…late.  I usually avoid being late but it looks like with the time difference I might be a little, shall we say, “off”. For this Intro Challenge, I decided to use Projeqt. I demo’d it to my students last year but this is the first time I’ve really tried it (I’m more of a non-linear Prezi girl, though I have a crush on Vuvox). Projeqt can embedd live RSS feeds and Twitter streams. Supposedly, you can do a v

    Double-Dipping MOOCs

Not sure what I am thinking but I couldn’t resist also signing up to be a part of #ETMOOC , or “Educational Technology and Media” (starting Jan. 28). I plan to use this blogging space for both, so I’ll be adding tags for either #etmooc or #edcmooc. What am I MOST excited about? a. being classmates with Vancouver educator extraordinaire, @Braddo b. starting the New Year off with a kick c. having a pseudo #ds106 experience (as indicated in the #etmooc orientation blog post) wit
